Getting the Ground Ready
We kick things off by stripping away any existing growth and clearing out all the rubbish—old turf, roots, stones, anything that might leave you with bumps and dips later on. The ground gets rotavated to break up compaction, which is especially crucial on new build sites where heavy equipment has squashed everything down solid.
More often than not, we’ll need to bring in some topsoil. We’re aiming for around 100-150mm depth of decent quality topsoil, giving those grass roots plenty of space to establish themselves properly. Rubbish soil will always give you a rubbish lawn, no matter how good the turf itself is. We level everything carefully and create gentle gradients sloping away from the house so water doesn’t collect in puddles.
Just before the turf goes down, we give the surface a final rake and a light firming—firm enough that you can walk across without leaving footprints, but not packed down too hard.
